You've Done Everything Right and Still Feel Terrible: The Environmental Root Cause Checklist

Short on energy? Here's the essence: If you eat well, move your body, sleep by the book, take the right supplements and still feel unwell, the missing variable may not be inside you at all. Almost no health protocol ever asks about the building you sleep in every night. This article gives you a starter checklist I use to screen for environmental root causes: a set of questions about your home, your history and your patterns that you can work through in twenty minutes. If several answers land, you'll finally have a direction – and it's an investigable, fixable one.
The healthiest sick person you know
There's a particular person this article is for, and you may be them: the one with the organised supplements and the tidy sleep schedule, the good diet held for years, the exercise done even on hard days. The one who has earned wellness by every rule they were given – and doesn't have it.
If that's you, you've probably absorbed an unspoken verdict along the way: that you must be missing something, doing something wrong, or simply built faulty. And if you're the partner or parent of this person, you've watched them try harder than anyone you know, for less result than anyone deserves – and run out of useful things to suggest.
Here's the reframe both of you need: every rule you've followed governs what goes into your body and how you use it. Almost none of them examine what surrounds it. You can execute a flawless health strategy inside an environment that undermines it nightly. Diligence was never your problem. Scope was.
How do I know if my home is making me sick?
Look for a cluster across five areas: your timeline, your patterns, your house's water story, your bedroom specifically and your household. No single answer proves anything, but several pointing the same way draws a map. Work through these with a notepad or a voice-to-text app; it takes about twenty minutes.
Your timeline
Can you date the decline, even roughly? Did it follow a move, a renovation, a leak, a flood, or a new workplace?
When did you last feel genuinely well, and where were you living at the time?
Your patterns
Do you feel noticeably better after a week or more away from home, then slide back within days of returning?
Are symptoms worse in winter, in humid weather, or when the house is closed up?
Are mornings your worst time – waking congested, foggy or headachy, easing as the day (and your time out of the bedroom) goes on? Or do you feel worse after hours in one particular space, such as a home office?
Is there a room or area of the house you tend to avoid because it just doesn't quite 'feel right'?
Your house's water story
Any history of leaks, flooding, rising damp, or “fixed” water damage – including before you moved in?
Musty smells anywhere, especially noticeable when you return from time away?
Winter condensation on windows? A bathroom, wardrobe or corner that never quite dries? Mould spots on grout, frames or ceilings, however small?
Have there been major renovations, and if so, when and what? Or has the home gone decades without one, particularly in the kitchen, laundry or bathroom?
Your bedroom specifically
Is it on the cool or shaded side of the house? Does the wardrobe wall or the wall behind the bedhead feel cold and damp in winter?
If a built-in or walk-in wardrobe is attached to the bedroom, do clothes, bags or shoes ever smell musty or show spots of mould?
Is there a subfloor, bathroom or known leak adjacent to, above or below the room?
Your household
Does anyone else – partner, children, pets – have their own low-grade, unexplained symptoms, even different ones from yours?
Did more than one household member's health shift within the same rough period?
Reading your results, calmly
A cluster of yeses doesn't mean disaster; it means direction: arguably the most valuable thing a chronically unwell person can acquire. It means there's a concrete, investigable hypothesis that your years of effort never had the chance to address, and a clear next step: a proper health-focused assessment of your home, alongside a clinical review of where your body now stands.
Mostly noes are valuable too. They make water damage a less likely driver, though it's worth knowing this checklist focuses on moisture and mould. Other environmental contributors, such as indoor air quality, everyday chemical exposures and the products you bring into your home, sit outside its scope and can still be worth a look.
A quieter result also lets the investigation turn with more confidence to your body itself, and that's where the naturopathic side of my work comes in. Persistent symptoms in a diligent person rarely have a single cause: gut function, hormones, nutrient status, stress physiology, past infections and immune patterns can all be tangled together, and every rule you've followed may have been addressing one thread while another went unnoticed. Plenty of people come to me for naturopathy alone, with no home assessment involved, and I draw on almost 15 years in practice to find the threads that matter in complex cases.
I'll tell you why this checklist exists in this exact form: it's a reconstruction of the questions nobody asked me. I was the diligent patient doing everything right inside a water-damaged home, and my effort kept losing to a variable that wasn't on anyone's intake form. The twenty minutes you just spent is the screening I needed years ago, and it's why my practice pairs building biology with naturopathic medicine in the first place. The problem lives across both worlds. So does the answer.
What happens after the checklist?
If your answers clustered: a building biology assessment turns suspicion into findings, a clinical picture establishes where your body currently stands, and then one plan: environment addressed in priority order, body supported at its real capacity, exposure adjustments where they genuinely count at a pace suited to you.
No panic, no purge. And your existing healthy habits aren't wasted, by the way. They're the reason you've held on this well – and once the headwind lifts, they finally get to show what they were always capable of.
Your effort deserves a fair environment
You've done your part, for a long time. Book a consultation, bring your checklist answers, and let's examine the one variable your regimen never could – together, and with a plan tailored to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm healthy on paper but always feel unwell – what could be wrong?
When bloodwork and habits are excellent but symptoms persist, unexamined variables deserve attention, and the home environment is the most commonly skipped one. Patterns like improving away from home or a household water history make it a priority to investigate.
What are the signs my house is affecting my health?
Key indicators: symptoms easing during extended time away, worse mornings or winters, musty odours, condensation, any water-damage history, and other household members with their own unexplained niggles, especially after a move.
Should I start with a home assessment or a naturopathic consultation?
Either is a valid starting point. If your checklist answers clustered around the home, a building biology assessment often brings the quickest clarity; if they didn't, or you'd like a clinical review first, start with a naturopathic consultation. Many people begin with one and add the other as the picture develops, and if you're unsure, we can work out the right order together.
What if I rent, or can't afford major works?
Direction still helps. Documented findings strengthen landlord conversations, many high-impact changes (ventilation, bedroom setup, moisture habits) are low-cost and easily managed by you with a bit of experienced guidance, and knowing the driver lets you spend only where it counts.
What's the difference between seeing you and just getting a mould inspection?
An inspection examines a building. I examine a building and the person in it, which means findings get interpreted against your symptoms, and the plan covers both the home's fixes and your body's recovery, in one sequence.
