The Gut-Mould Connection: How a Water-Damaged Home Can Disrupt Your Digestion Long After Exposure Ends

Short on energy? Here's the essence: Bloating, food reactions and unsettled digestion that began – or worsened – around the time you lived in a damp or mouldy home may not be a coincidence. Inhaled exposures from water-damaged buildings can affect the gut, and gut symptoms can outlast the exposure itself. The good news: once the connection is recognised, the gut responds well to properly sequenced support. I address both the environmental history and the digestive recovery, because they're one story.

When your gut stopped cooperating

Maybe you can put a rough date on it. Somewhere along the way, perhaps around a certain house, a certain year – your digestion changed. Foods you'd eaten your whole life started causing trouble. Bloating became your default state. You've since done the eliminations, the low-FODMAP experiments, the probiotics. Each helped a little, or for a while, and then the ground shifted again.

Here's the question that almost never gets asked in a gut consultation: where were you living when this started?

How can something you breathe affect your digestion?

Because much of what you inhale, you also swallow. The airways clear particles upward and they're swallowed, so the gut receives a steady, low-level delivery of whatever the indoor air contains, and the gut lining and microbiome are sensitive to that load.

It seems strange that something you breathe could unsettle your digestion, so let's break it down in a nutshell:

  • The gut lining and microbiome are sensitive to that load. Mould by-products and the broader mixture found in water-damaged buildings can irritate the gut lining and shift the balance of the microbiome: the very ecosystem that governs digestion, food tolerance and a large share of immune function.

  • Systemic inflammation loops back to the gut. An immune system activated by an environmental exposure doesn't confine its response to the sinuses. Gut function, motility and sensitivity are all affected by that whole-body state.

And here's why the puzzle persists after moving out: a disrupted microbiome and irritated gut lining don't automatically snap back once exposure ends. Without the environmental history in view, the lingering symptoms look like a mysterious, free-standing gut disorder – and get treated as one, indefinitely.

The piece I had to find for myself

During my own illness from a water-damaged building, gut symptoms were part of my picture, and I did what most people do: treated the gut as its own isolated problem. Progress was slow and circular until the environmental driver was recognised and the two were addressed together. That experience, frustrating at the time, is now one of the most useful things I bring to clients: I know how this puzzle looks from the inside, and I know the order the pieces go in.

This is also where the dual lens matters practically. A gut-focused practitioner without building knowledge can't tell you whether exposure is ongoing, and gut repair while exposure continues (or if it wasn’t properly able to heal after the exposure has stopped) is an uphill exercise. A building specialist can find the damp but has nothing to offer your microbiome. The work needs both, ideally in the same conversation.

How do I heal my gut after mould exposure?

In order: reduce the exposure as far as your circumstances allow, calm the gut before rebuilding it, then restore diversity and gradually broaden the diet. Removing the exposure entirely is the cleanest starting point, but it is not available to everyone, and that does not put recovery out of reach. It changes the pace and the plan, not the possibility.

The approach here is deliberately unheroic:

  1. Start with the environment, as far as you are able. If your current home has a damp problem, that is where the biggest lever sits, because repairing a gut into an ongoing exposure is working into a headwind. Remediation or moving is the cleanest answer. It is also, for plenty of people, not an available one – which is exactly why the section below exists.

  2. Calm before rebuilding. An irritated gut doesn't want an aggressive protocol or a fistful of new supplements. Early work centres on settling the lining and nervous system, with food that's genuinely tolerated – not the most restrictive diet the internet could suggest.

  3. Then restore. As reactivity eases, we work on microbiome diversity and gradually broaden the diet. Expanding what you can eat is the goal; long-term restriction is not a destination. Where some exposure remains, this stage is steadier and slower, and we build in more support to hold the ground you gain.

  4. Throughout, lower the background load. Simple adjustments at home reduce the total burden your gut and immune system are juggling – and when one part of that burden cannot be removed, everything else you take off the pile counts for more.

What if I can’t stop the exposure right now?

You can still make real progress. When remediation or moving is not financially possible, the work shifts from removing the exposure to lowering it and strengthening what your body has to meet it with. Progress is slower and needs maintaining, but it is genuinely achievable, and it is built from changes that do not require a builder or a new address.

Remediation and moving are expensive, and I would rather give you somewhere to start than a barrier you cannot get past. In practice that looks like:

  • Make the bedroom the priority room. You spend roughly a third of every day in it, so keeping that one room drier, cleaner and better ventilated buys your body a long, consistent stretch of lower exposure every night. When the budget only stretches to one room, this is the one.

  • Control moisture at the source. Exhaust fans running during and after showers, washing dried outside rather than indoors, windows opened when the outside air is drier, condensation wiped off windows and sills instead of left to sit. Free or close to it, and it directly limits what can grow.

  • Reduce what holds and re-releases particles. Soft furnishings, stored cardboard, clutter and carpet all trap spores and fragments and give them back to the room. Laundering, decluttering or relocating those items lowers daily re-exposure without touching the building itself.

  • Clean in a way that removes rather than redistributes. Damp dusting and a HEPA-filtered vacuum take particles out of the room. Dry dusting and a standard vacuum push them back into the air you are breathing.

  • Filter the air you cannot fix. A HEPA and activated carbon unit sized for the room, run in the bedroom overnight, does real work when the building cannot be changed. One good unit in the right room beats several underpowered ones spread thin.

  • Subtract the loads you can control. Fragrance, harsh cleaning products, unventilated gas cooking. Your immune system responds to a total burden, not to mould alone, so anything you take off the pile leaves more capacity for what is left on it.

  • If you rent, put it in writing. Reporting damp, leaks or visible mould to your agent or landlord in writing creates a record and sometimes gets the repair done. It costs nothing to send, and it is worth doing even if you expect a slow answer.

Alongside that, the clinical work leans harder on resilience: sleep, nourishment, steady elimination, and a nervous system that is not stuck on high alert. Progress in these circumstances tends to look like maintenance rather than a finish line – steadier digestion, fewer flares, a wider range of foods you can eat, more capacity on an ordinary day. That is not a consolation prize. For a lot of people it is the difference between coping and not, and it starts with what is already within reach.
